CARPENTER BEE
"Length ½”–1” Carpenter bees have black, shiny abdomens. The males have a yellow face, while female’s is black. They get their names from their nesting procedures. Carpenter bees will bore holes into decks or other wooden structures. The female will bore a circular hole into the wood about an inch, then make a 90-degree turn and continue for another 4”–6”. Males carpenter bees are territorial and often become aggressive when humans are near, buzzing around their heads. However, the males have no stinger and can not harm you. The females are capable of giving you a potent sting, but this rarely happens. Carpenter bees prefer weathered, unpainted wood so treating or painting your wooden structures will provide some protection from them."
