Squeak! Squeak! Squeak! Well, winter is on its way and so are the mice! Due to the upcoming winter weather, mice are headed to your home so they can stay nice and toasty just like you! As an added bonus, you have stocked your cabinets with some tasty food to help them through the winter season. While it’s not really the amount of food they eat that is a hindrance, it is the amount of food that has to be thrown away because of damage or contamination from gnawing, urine, & droppings. Once mice become established inside your home, they are very difficult to control. Mice also transmit diseases, mainly salmonella when food is contaminated with rodent feces. These little guys can also cause BIG damage because they like to gnaw through electrical wiring which can cause appliance failures and even start fires! If you have every square inch of your home sealed, no worries! But if there is a gap around a pipe, under a door, etc., the mice will find a way into your house because they are able to squeeze themselves in some very tight cracks and crevices! Science tells us is that mice can flatten themselves down to a quarter of an inch (about the size of a pencil!) so they can squeeze in around your garage door and even up under the edges of your siding! In the early part of mouse season, one of the most popular areas for mice to enter is attics and crawlspaces. These two areas are the easiest for them to get into. While you may think of purchasing traps or poison when you start hearing or seeing these rodents, please be aware that dogs, cats, and children may find them before the mice do! So if you have any questions about mice, or you start hearing strange noises in the attic or crawlspace, call the experts at Steve’s Pest Control.
